The Fall Of JUUL and Rise Of Vaping Prohibition

Prohibition doesn’t work, and if you don’t believe us, stop by your local liquor store and see how it’s going because alcohol was once banned from 1920-1933 in most of the United States. For as long as the FDA and the US government have existed, they have both continually put their sights on regulating and, in some cases, banning things that many Americans use and enjoy.

But recently, as many vapers know, the FDA has been awarding and denying the sales of vaping products, and in the past few months, one of the most prolific vape brands saw the sad hand of doom. JUUL officially came to market in 2015 and became wildly popular as the device was pretty reliable and easy to use. While there were plenty of other vaping devices on the market years before, JUUL was revolutionary in that it allowed less than vape geeks a way to seamlessly vape without having to refill tanks, change coils, or any of the other hassles that had previously been required for mod vaping. It quickly gained popularity and notoriety in that the JUUL device itself was compact, looked like a USB thumb drive, and had a solid lineup of traditional and fruity, sweet-flavored pods. Unfortunately, JUUL began to get a ton of bad press for seemingly using their marketing efforts toward non-adults which didn’t sit well with the FDA or tobacco harm reduction organizations. In an attempt to maintain its quickly gained market share, JUUL introduced age verification technology but never effectively rolled it out to every retail location that sold its products. In 2020, the FDA put the hammer down on JUUL and other copycat flavored cartridge-based vape products by banning all flavored pods except tobacco and menthol flavors. While there were plenty of knock-off flavored pods that were compatible with JUUL devices, the damage was done, and market plummeted seemingly overnight. Today, most vape shops, including Smoke Tokz Olathe, carry disposable vapes, which saw a massive rise with the fall of JUUL and the increasingly watchful eye of the FDA, countless lawsuits, and an overall shift in what vapers actually wanted. Without the JUUL product, many of the current vaping devices would not exist. While JUUL was able to get temporary approval to stay on the market while the FDA reviewed their application again, the fact is that they were the poster child for the war on vaping.

At Smoke Tokz Olathe Smoke and Vape Shops, we don’t endorse or allow the underage sale of any tobacco or vaping product EVER. However, we do follow what the FDA does and plans to do in terms of restricting and prohibiting the legal sale of vaping products to adults 21 years or older, which we do not agree with at all. We will continue to monitor any news on the vaping front as it happens and pass it along to our customers.
